Farewell Beloved Roddy

Beloved eponymous pub veteran Roddy O'Malley passed away this afternoon after a traffic accident outside his front door at Roddy's Bar in South Ealing. Taken in his prime and before his time he was known for elegant coiffure and friendly manner. He will be missed.

Need an Energy Boost?

Energy Therapists will be at the London Buddhist Vihara, The Avenue, W4 1UD on Monday, 10th March, between 11am and 1pm (last session 12.45).  After the weather we have been having we all could do with some help.  Come and get an energy top up!  A session takes about 15-20 minutes and I am sure that you will feel really good at the end of that time.  A number of therapists come in each month and give their services free.  The Vihara kindly allow us to use the hall at no charge so a donation is most welcome  -  all donations are given to the Vihara. These sessions are not related to any religion, everyone is welcome.

What info Councils hold on you and sell to others

There are rumours that several local authorities have been passing personal information they hold on council tax payers and residents to third parties. Hounslow have been passing details of single council tax payers to a third party as well as details of Council tenants. Some have recieved rather nasty letters over their right to single persons discount. A right not a benefit as is being implied. This also includes details of residents who have CPZ permits and their vehicle details.Companies like Serco are recipients and details are being passed on to firms like Experian who then control an individuals credit rating and one has to pay for the access to their own information. These companies are far from reputable and Banks and other organisations have placed far too much responsibility with them. Most of us are unaware of such trading in our personal information.Does anyone know if Ealing , Hammersmith Brent or Hounslow are doing this?

Raising money for charity

Just read the article on the front page about politicians sleeping rough for charity and it made me think about all these fundraising activities which go on. Instead of running marathons or sleeping in boxes, why don't people do something which is useful to society instead. For example: Weeding old people's gardens, cleaning their houses, painting unsightly walls, removing graffiti, picking up litter etc etc?

Abuse of the legal aid system

A millionare has been granted legal aid as reported in the evening standard today. The legal aid system was designed to give those who are poor an equal chance for justice. So why do we always hear about millionaires and councillors receiving legal aid. What is the govt going to do about it?How can someone receive legal aid when they clearly have assets which can be sold off. This is another case of where it is one law for the rich and one for the poor.

Eat Your Campus

Food and eating on the brain now.  I have just been sent this and think it is a lovely project.  There were herbs in boxes on Chiswick High Road last year and this is another project bringing the growing of food closer to people.  It's lovely to have fresh herbs you can pick in your garden.  A short journey from the garden to the plate.http://www.renewablesandenvironment.com/en/re/carbon/704/Eat-Your-Campus-project-wins-national-university-award.htm

Bill's

You've got to love big business corporate marketing spin:  "Bill's is the brainchild of Bill Collinson, who grew up in Lewes and started by running a greengrocer shop..."No mention that Bill's is now just a brand of the major restaurant group Cote.  Hence the sudden rapid growth throughout London.I wish Bill's every success in Ealing, but like Harris and Hoole (Tesco) it lacks a bit on honesty.

Pancake thick or thin ?

Should pancakes be made thick or thin, fluffy or rubbery(there's a Chinese dialect joke there), pale or brown, sweet or savoury?  What's the best pancake filling for Tuesday?

Vandals cut BT phone cables in Ealing

Thousands of people have been left with no phone service after what BT described as "malicious damage" to cables in west London.BT said 11 cables were vandalised in Ealing on Saturday affecting people in the capital and parts of the South East. I have not had a problem.

Ealing Library - No Donations & A New Phone Number

So Ealing Central library no longer accept donations of books, apparently because they were fed up with receiving low quality books which they then had to manually add to their database...Let's hope this means they have a nice healthy budget to buy more books each year!I guess my giant bag of costume & fashion books (a subject in which they are woefully deficient) will have to go on Freecycle or to Oxfam then. The library also has a new contact number, which is not the same as the one that is found on the internet or via ringing directory enquiries (0208 825 9278), but is no-where to be found on the Ealing Council website, which still lists the old one!I love libraries, I really do, but I find the ones in Ealing very frustrating, often under-stocked and not always staffed by the most helpful of people!

Border Control Police

I saw an "Immigration Detention Department" van (with police blue and white markings ) in Milton Road, off Greenford Avenue, this morning.  It was parked on the pavement (whatever next; vehicles on the pavement) next to Castle Estate Agents.Anyone know any more?
