240 new flats - and zero parking?

Another proposal: for 240 new homes, in a block of flats behind the shops facing Haven Green - where the squash courts used to be. Apparently there will be no parking needed for any of the people who will live there. Isn't this totally unrealistic, or have I misunderstood?

Unfortunately it’s the new norm.First of  all, where once stood a 2 storey house, it will now become a block of 8 floors. Seeing the sky will be a thing of the past.Then councils & tfl with their infatuation about net zero, hate cars/vehicles, except as a cash cow.There idea is everybody can cycle, use public transport or walk.No exceptions & led by the cyclists cult.The amount of restrictions & obstacles  hurdles the council put in place, closing more & more roads, shutting lanes, causes more congestion & pollution.Farcical

Council policy is now for new developments to be car free nor will the tenants/ owners be eligible for resident's parking permits. Basically, got a car move elsewhere.

Excellent tube and train links from Ealing Broadway station and an almost constant stream of buses along the Uxbridge Road. Why would you need a car?

And that’s precisely the narrow minded thinking that results in large volumes of new flats being unsold.How much do you think these new flats will cost? Who’s going to buy them? The mythical white collar commuters flocking to Ealing with its abundant attractions for the well-heeled young professional? Believe me, there are plenty of more attractive locations for those (dwindling) purchasers in London.I was talking to an estate agency boss last week. He told me the market is moribund at the moment for a variety of reasons, but creating car free developments isn’t helping. They automatically exclude anyone who needs a vehicle for work and aren’t attractive to wealthier people who own a high value car and might, you know, want to park near where they live.And if you think everything is easily accessed by public transport now you need your head examined. Bus services are patchy with long delays on some routes while others are being culled on the quiet. The Tube is an ongoing mess with TfL struggling financially.But if you really want to believe the utopian BS perpetually peddled by Paul and his LCC cronies, go ahead.

This constant lecturing that ‘nobody needs a car in London’ is boring and just plain wrong. There’s a smug middle class minority for whom such a lifestyle exist, although it turns out they aren’t entirely car free themselves.Regardless of the fact that it’s not illegal to own and drive a car, it really isn’t up to morons like Paul James to persistently bleat about too many cars when he’s happy to use one himself when it suits. I bet he doesn’t insist on his visitors all coming by other modes of transport either.At some point Paul and his smug chums will find themselves less able and hopefully they will be trapped in a carless hole of their own making. I wonder how he’ll cope then.

When I was a teenager I used to deliver for Hawkins to the Ealing Squash Club and found it a fairly average size. I'm bewildered how they are planning on cramming 240 flats into the space. No wonder there is no space for cars

There seems to be some kind of unstated 'conspiracy' between councils and developers, in that it's obviously much cheaper for developers to build a block of flats without providing any car parking, as used to be required, so councils help out by designating it a 'car free' project, and wheel out their familiar 'making the world a better place' argument.I suppose the proof of the pudding, etc., so how well do 'car free' flats actually sell around Ealing, bearing in mind about 50% of the population of Ealing don't own a car?

No surprises there. We have an 8 storey block of flats in the process of being built at the end of Pitshanger Lane where the old folks home used to be.Since some are 3 bedroom flats one supposes they might have families in mind but for the fact that there are only 3 or 4 car spaces and these are solely for Blue Badge holders. So there may, or not, be drivers zooming around looking ( unsuccessfully) for somewhere to park. It’s now policy to exclude car drivers. It’s not just Sadiq Khan. All the boroughs seem in on the act.

The proposed building is for co-living apartments likely aimed at young professionals and not elderly people. It is literally sitting on top of one of the best connected transport hubs in west London so would be ideal for non car owners. There is also the question of where you would put the parking for the building — any suggestions?

Car free developments are not usual these days and are just a reflection that there is increasing population density but no growth in available parking.

It is very much in the interest of people already living in Ealing that a small proportion of people living in new developments are not car owners for this reason.

 In most cases car free developments are stipulated not for some broader climate reasons but because existing residents insist on this being the case. There will always be concerns about available parking spaces and designating a development as car free rules out the chances of residents getting permits.  Car free doesn't mean no cars. People living here will be heavy users of Uber and some may be able to access car clubs. There will also be some residents who managed to get business parking permits for adjacent CPZs.

As a local Acton Resident, I have for years been taking the Bus along the Uxbridge Road along  Acton Park and noticing the enormous partly-constructed concrete shell of the massive Block of Apartments there. And then after a while, it dawned on me that NO WORK was being done there at all and that the incomplete Building was AN ALBATROSS left by the Lewis Henry Construction Company which went BANKRUPT in 2023 with Debts of some £43 million (but not before the Family removed some £6 million for Lewis Henry's Wife to buy new Mansion!). So...this massive unfinished Construction Site could potentially be there for YEARS, or even DECADES whilst Ealing Council either come a Decision perhaps to Fund it's completetion or DEMOLISH it completely!
